National Self-exclusion Register is close to being finalised

Easier way to self-exclude will be available soon

What will BetStop do?

BetStop is a free service for people who want help changing their gambling habits.

It will allow people to self-exclude from all legal online or phone wagering operations in Australia in one simple process.

Once someone has chosen their self-exclusion period, these wagering providers are not allowed to accept a bet or open a new account for them. Providers are also not allowed to send direct marketing messages to people registered with BetStop.

People on BetStop will be able to nominate up to 5 support people to help them manage their self‑exclusion. Personal details of users will be protected.

Can someone pre-register?

No. People can only self-exclude once BetStop has commenced.

You can register to be informed once BetStop launches.

In the meantime, there are existing self-exclusion programs offered by individual wagering providers, as well as state and territory exclusion registers.

What is the self-exclusion period?

People will be able to self-exclude for a minimum of 3 months, up to a lifetime.

Will a cooling-off period be offered if someone self-excludes then changes their mind?

No.

Can people select which providers they want to exclude from?

No. If someone self-excludes, they will be excluded from all of the approximately 140 licensed wagering providers in Australia.

Can someone be placed on BetStop by another person?

No. The individual must exclude themself. The register operator is not permitted to accept third-party registrations.

Can a person nominate a support person to help them with their self-exclusion?

Yes, people can nominate up to 5 people to help them manage their self-exclusion. Support people can be changed or removed while someone is registered.

What is the role of a support person and what do they need to do?

A support person is there to assist the person registered with BetStop through their self-exclusion. A support person can be anyone – a family member, a friend, or a professional who the person is seeing, such as a counsellor.

Once nominated, the support person will be invited to create an account. This will allow them to receive specific information about the individual’s self-exclusion, including the self-exclusion period, be notified of any changes, and access support materials.

When will BetStop be operational?

BetStop is currently being tested and should be live in the coming months. The start date will be formally set by the Australian Government.
